Western Governors University

Online educationed provided by a non-profit organization..

BACKGROUND
It seems like colleges and universities today care more about profits then students these days. One such college that is trying to break away from this trend is Western Governors University. Western Governors University is truly centered around the student.

Western Governors University is a non-profit university. The university was actually founded by 19 state governors and is still supported by them today. Western Governors University is also supported by more than 20 major corporations such as AT&T, Dell and Microsoft.

The university is completely online and can be accessed by students 24 hours a day. Unlike other “degree mill” online universities, WGU focuses on student-mentor interaction. Each student has a mentor in their degree field that will assist the student through each course. Students are never left alone at WGU. Teachers are all industry professionals and actually care about the student’s success. Classes are competency-based which means if a student has already mastered a subject they can “test out” of any class or build a degree around any classes they choose.

Western Governors University is accredited regionally and nationally, which means credits may transfer to traditional universities. This distinction is normally not held for any online universities. Basic tuition is $2,790 for six months, which is pretty decent considering the quality of education at WGU. Financial aid is also available and is easily obtainable.

Great for working older students. Perfect for me. I transferred in my AS Degree and my IT certifications. I was able to finish in 1 term. BS IT Degree for $3000. Not bad. If you are young, I would a least get your AS degree at a brick and mortar school so you can experience college life. posted Dec 13th, 2011 8:52 pm

The above formal review is totally accurate. I just completed WGU's Educational Leadership program and earned my master's degree. It was rigorous, compelling and definitely challenging. I wrote over 50 research papers. My mentor was well-qualified and kept me focused and encouraged. The capstone process was no joke either, and correlates closely to a doctoral dissertation. I felt very prepared for my final state assessment and passed with no difficulty. The bottom line is that after going through the process, I am now more efficient and even more determined to continue my life-long learning goals. Thanks WGU! posted Dec 19th, 2010 9:43 am

I've been a student in the IT program for about ayear now and i think it's a great concept which works well for those with the discipline to study on thier own.

The bottom line- It's upon the student to do for themselves... no one is going to keep reminding you to keep working on it. I think that for the money, you'll probably not find a better (and fully accredited) school. posted Apr 16th, 2009 9:00 am
