Izzo’s Move to Stay with Spartans Saves the NCAA Another Face

tom-izzoAccording to the Detroit Free Press, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo is going to stay in East Lansing and coach the Michigan State Spartans.

This is great news for Michigan State fans (like me!), but it’s also great news for college basketball and the NCAA as a whole.

In today’s one-and-done college sport culture, the athletes have taken a backseat to the coaches when it comes to the marketability of the sport. You can’t publicize an O.J. Mayo or a John Wall when you know those players are only going to be around for a couple of months.

Remember, in basketball, all the money comes in from the NCAA Tournament. But Kevin Durant’s NCAA Tournament career lasted two games. There’s just not a lot of value in having to hitch your wagon to a new star every year.

Coaches are the faces of the NCAA, and Tom Izzo is one of the biggest faces. He’s accrued a winning percentage of .713, reached the NCAA Tournament 13 years straight, gone to half a dozen Final Fours, and won a National Title. The Spartans are a consensus Top 3 team this year.

The impact of Izzo’s decision on the teams involved can’t be understated. This makes Michigan State a lot stronger. And yeah, if you want to read between the lines, it could mean LeBron is taking off.

But in the bigger picture, Izzo’s move to stay is a huge coup for the NCAA, which gets to keep a big face in the fold.
