What to Wear to Sorority Rush

With fall sorority rush just around the corner, along with back to school shopping, many girls are wondering what to wear during the recruitment process.

Here are some college fashion tips I have found to hold tried and true throughout the years:

Begin by looking at your school’s Greek Life website, because sometimes the days of recruitment (especially Panhellenic) are themed and any dress codes for recruitment parties are announced on their websites. You’ll want to dress comfortably, as you’re going to need all of your internal confidence. It can be hard to feel self-assured on the inside when you’re uncomfortable on the outside.

Try to subtly stand out from the crowd. Choose a memorable piece of jewelry or interesting color, it will make the members remember you more. With so many girls, some can get lost in the shuffle. Members tend to remember “the brunette with the black bow head band” over plain Janes. Don’t try too hard though, you want want to appear to mesh well into their organization.

Be cautious when wearing heels, you will probably be walking from house to house and up and down stairs. Ensure that you can walk gracefully, without tripping, in them and that they are appropriate for your outfit.

Present yourself in an appropriate manner. A little make-up, especially lip-gloss and mascara, shows that you’ve made an effort to appear polished. The most popular look this fall is the porcelain face: dark mascara, minimal dark eyeliner, light natural blush, even skin tone from foundation, flash-colored eye shadow. Smokey eyes should be reserved for the dressier days, and steer clear from the colored eye-shadow – sororities are clubs, but not that kind of club! Hair should be natural but adding a little volume and soft curls is encouraged.

I would refrain from wearing strong perfume (just a soft, pleasant scent), backless shirts, spaghetti straps, formal wear, really short dresses or shorts, sneakers (unless instructed), sweatshirts, school spirited shirts, cropped tops, etc.

Some great brands to start shopping in would be Kensie at Macy’s, Aqua at Bloomingdales, BP at Nordstroms, Free People, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, American Eagle, Asos.com and Forever 21.
