College Football Stunner: Buckeyes Blitzed

Now things are getting interesting.

After seven weeks of college football, the two teams most thought would meet for the national championship, Alabama and Ohio State, have both lost. As a result, the race to Glendale is wide open. Here’s a look at the significant games from Week 7:ohio state

1. Rocked at Camp Randall: After suffering from coverage team breakdowns all season, the Wisconsin Badgers finally got to experience the other side of the coin. David Gilreath took the opening kickoff back 97 yards for a touchdown to put Ohio State behind the 8-ball, and the Badgers jumped out to a 21-0 lead en route to a 31-18 victory over the top-ranked Buckeyes. The win was Wisconsin Head Coach Bert Bielema’s first against a top 10 team, and keeps Wisconsin’s hopes alive for a Rose Bowl. The Buckeyes national title hopes are effectively dashed, as they now sit fourth in the Big 10.

2. Beat Texas? Not quite: The Nebraska Cornhuskers had circled October 15th on their calenders before the year began. It was going to be their last shot at beating rival Texas before they left the Big 12 for the Big 10. And with Texas on the ropes after two straight losses, and Taylor Martinez a star in the making at quarterback, the Huskers looked primed to go out with a bang. But Nebraska’s wide receivers spent the entire 60 minutes dropping passes, and the Longhorns prevailed 21-14. Nebraska dropped at least three touchdown passes in the game, the final one coming late in the fourth quarter on fourth down.

3. Locker Lights up Oregon State: Washington quarterback Jake Locker had five touchdowns as the Huskies knocked off Oregon State 35-34 in double overtime after the Beavers’ two-point conversion attempt in the second overtime fell incomplete. The loss by Oregon State did a number on Boise State’s strength of schedule, significantly hurting the Broncos chances to crash the BCS title game. (More on that in my BCS reaction.)

Other noteworthy games: #11 Michigan State tops Illinois and is the only unbeaten Big-10 team, #7 Auburn hangs 65 points on #12 Arkansas, Hawaii knocks off unbeaten #19 Nevada.
