Have a Happy and Green Holiday

Christmas is my favorite time of the year. The lights, pretty-packaged gifts and the holiday sweets make the winter months a little more bearable. But, unfortunately, Christmas is also a time when we over consume, wastefully toss gift wrapping paper and crank up our energy bills with Christmas lights.
Whether you’re spending the holidays at home or on campus, it’s important to keep the environment in mind.

Follow these tips to have a green holiday:

Wrapping: Use the “funnies” pages out of your local newspaper to wrap gifts, or use them as tissue paper. Find old paper bags and use them as gift bags. Top off your bag or wrapped gift with a large bow to add a touch of festivity. You’ll save money on gift wrapping, and you will also be doing Mother
Earth a favor.

Lights: If you really want to go green, skip the Christmas lights all together. But, if you can’t help but spread some holiday cheer in your dorm or at home, pick LED lighting. They are more expensive than incandescent bulbs, but they last longer and use less electricity.

Gifts: During the holidays, American consumption skyrockets due to gift giving, but you could save some green and help the environment by creating gifts yourself. Spend some time in the kitchen and make homemade candies like peanut brittle or fudge. If you’ve got the extra cash, take it a step further and donate to a charity in your friends’ or family members’ name.

Decorations: Buy them used, or make your own. You can find tons of tree decorations at the DAV, but if you really want to get creative, use what you have around the house. Mini-picture frames, costume jewelry and other small trinkets make awesome Christmas ornaments.

Victoria’s Secret also has cute gift bags. I use them for my female friends’ gifts. I cross out the “Victoria’s” part with black marker and put the person’s name above it. Friends think it is such a cute idea!

I buy a lot of stuff at Starbucks and their holiday bags are so festive! I like to use them in place of gift bags. You can also cut it open and use it as wrapping paper that way!
