Hugh Laurie’s Education Background

Hugh Laurie is an English actor, comedian, author, musician, and director. He is well known for being part of the Fry and Laurie double comedy act, and more recently, for playing Dr. Gregory House on the hit television series, House. On April 1, 2011, his next production – the animated movie, Hop – will hit the big screens. EDUinReview will now take a look at Laurie’s education background.

Laurie was born on June 11, 1959 in Oxford, England. He is the youngest child of Patricia and Ran Laurie; he has two older sisters and one older brother. Laurie grew up in Oxford and attended The Dragon School, a coed preparatory school. After the Dragon School, Laurie studied at Eton and Cambridge. While he was at Cambridge, he was an oarsman and was very skilled at the sport. Unfortunately, he suffered from glandular fever and was forced to abandon rowing. He then joined the Cambridge Footlights Club, a club that has been the launching point for many successful comedians. He was elected president of the Footlights in 1981.

Laurie started his career as a comedian and commie actor with his partner, Stephen Fry. The duo were selected for a sketch comedy show, Alfresco, in 1982. They went on to work on several projects together in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1996, Laurie wrote his first novel, The Gun Seller, which became a best seller. In 2004, he landed the starring role in the popular television show, House. He has been nominated for an Emmy for this role and has won two Golden Globes and two Screen Actors Guild awards.

In addition to acting, Laurie is also a talented musician. He plays the piano, drums, saxophone, guitar, and harmonica. His first album is set to be released on May 9, 2011 in the UK. It is called Let Them Talk and is a blues album.

On a personal note, Laurie has been married to Jo Green since June 1989. They have two children, Charlie and Rebecca. The family lives in London but has had plans of moving to Los Angeles to be closer to Laurie when he is working. On May 23, 2007, Queen Elizabeth II made Laurie an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to drama.
