Howard Stern’s Education Background

Howard Stern HeadshotHoward Allan Stern was born on January 12, 1954. He lived with his family in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. His father Ben Stern was a co-owner of a recording studio, Auro Recording, Inc. Ben Stern was also an engineer for a Manhattan radio Station. Stern’s mother, Ray Stern was a homemaker and eventually an inhalation specialist. Stern has one older sister, Ellen.

The Stern family moved to multiple sections of New York state during Sterns childhood. Stern attended Washington-Rose Elementary School until sixth grade. After sixth grade, Stern attended Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School. In 1969 the family moved once more and Stern transferred to South Side High School in Rockville Centre.

In 1972 Stern began at Boston University in the College of Basic Studies. Stern remained at Boston University and he gained admission to the School of Public Communications in 1974. Stern earned a diploma in July 1975 at the Radio Engineering Institute of Electronics in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He also graduated magna cum laude from Boston University in May 1976 with a degree in communications and now funds a scholarship at the school.

Stern’s career was started at a very early age. His interest in radio was sparked at he age of five, thanks to his father’s position. Stern worked as a disc jockey in college. He began with multiple radio stations after college and through out the early eighties.

Stern was paired with newscaster and co-host, Robin Quivers in the early eighties and the two remain co-hosts today. Stern quickly earned the reputation of “Shock Jock” and has been fined several times throughout his controversial career. In the mid-eighties, The Howard Stern Show was one of the most popular radio programs. At it’s peak, The Howard Stern Show aired in 60 markets to 20 million listeners. It was the top rated morning show in the New York area between 1994 and 2001. Stern left radio in 2005 for Sirius XM Satellite radio.

Currently Stern is the highest paid radio figure in the United States. Stern has also received the most fines. He has tallied $2.5 million in FCC fines. Stern has three children with his first wife. He is currently married to a second wife, a model named Beth Ostrosky.
