College Football 2011: Sooners and Seminoles Clash in Tallahassee, Ohio State and Miami Seek Redemption

University of Oklahoma Sooners Pennate

By Cabrone D. Brewer

It was a quiet weekend in Norman, OK, but even as head coach Bob Stoops and the Oklahoma Sooners rested during a bye week, they were still able to conjure plenty of noise in The Associated Press college football poll.

Without playing a game, the University of Oklahoma became the first school to hold the top ranking for the 100th time in the history of the AP poll. For the Sooners, reaching this historic milestone comes with a thrilling challenge.

Heading to a swirling Doak-Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, No. 1 Oklahoma will stare down its gritty weekend opponent, No. 5 Florida State in a nonconference thriller for both the Seminoles and the Sooners. Quarterback EJ Manuel and the ‘Noles are with no doubt out for blood after last year’s 47-17 drudging in Norman.

In what many students and alumni have dubbed the “Ineligibowl,” No. 17 Ohio State travels to South Beach to take on Jacory Harris and the Miami Hurricanes. Harris returns at quarterback for the ‘Canes, as both teams are still suffering from the effects of a horrible off-season filled with NCAA sanctions and numerous suspensions. Ohio State is searching for answers after sneaking away with a 27-22 victory over Toledo last weekend in Columbus. If the Buckeyes become that exposed again this weekend, the Hurricanes may be able to capitalize on a win after their loss to Maryland.

Other notable matchups that are not to be forgotten about: Tennessee faces No. 16 Florida in an always exciting battle between two SEC powerhouses in Gainesville; No. 21 Auburn is on a mission to prove they’re worthy of a return to the top 25, taking on 2-0 Clemson; Notre Dame and second year coach Brian Kelly look to avoid an 0-3 start against a tough No. 15 Michigan State squad; And quarterback Andrew Luck is aiming to put up Heisman numbers as No. 6 Stanford squares off with Arizona.

Check our blog next week for a recap of all this weekend’s college football headliners.
