Annual awards for high school juniors who complete the American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program and are a direct descendant or child of a U.S. veteran who served during a specified period of war and will be pursuing postsecondary studies upon graduation. The veteran must have been on active duty during one of the following conflicts: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Lebanon/Grenada, Panama, or the Persian Gulf War. Seven "Samsung American Legion Scholars" will be selected from the pool of "state finalists" and will receive $20,000 to be used over a six year period, and the remaining state finalists will receive $1,000 to be used over a two year period.
