What to Expect at Panhellenic Sorority Bid Day

An Alpha Gamma Delta Bid Day Card

With some schools already half-way through their recruitment weeks, many of you have been asking what to expect on Bid Day for Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment.

Bid day is the day that every girl who has been through the complete recruitment process (meaning they have attended every sorority’s recruitment party and been invited back to at least one chapter) receives their sorority bid.

The bid is an actual invitation to join the pledge period of a specific sorority. In most cases, bids are distributed in an envelope, similar to a party invitation. The potential new members open their cards and normally cry or squeal with delight and run (yes, literally run) to their new sorority house.

A party is then held to celebrate the new pledge class members with alumnae and current members also in attendance. The party is normally a dinner at a restaurant that can accommodate large groups followed by some sort of bonding activity, like a sleepover at the sorority house. Bid day parties are also strictly and respectfully non-alcoholic events.

If you’re chosen to receive a bid to a sorority, expect lots of sisterly bonding, a new t-shirt to wear with your new Greek letters on it, a bag full of sorority goodies, balloons, cake, food and fun!

Common Bid Day party locations and activities include:

  • Amusement parks
  • Applebee’s
  • BBQs
  • Broadway shows
  • Buca de Beppo
  • Cheesecake Factory
  • Chili’s
  • Dinner cruises
  • Hard Rock Café
  • Luaus
  • Mystery Dinner Theatre
  • Olive Garden
  • P.F. Changs

Bid day is the most amazing day on both sides of recruitment! For the ladies going through, it’s nerve-wracking and a whirlwind. For the women recruiting, it’s signifies the end to a long, exhausting week–and all your hard work pays off when you meet your new sisters! Our bid day starts with all of the girls going through meet at the campus center auditorium, and then one by one they call out your name and you come up, grab your card, open it–and this next part is a blur. You exit the auditorium into the main area of the campus center, you show one of the recruitment counselors (Pi Chi’s) your card–they shove you toward a table where another Pi Chi shoves a shirt over your head and pushes you out the door. Once your out the door it’s pure SCREAMING. All of the sororities are outside of the campus center with banners, balloons, signs and then you are tackled by the girls who you talked to during recruitment and they walk you over to your new sisters. After every girl has ran out, including the Pi-Chi’s, the sororities all head over to the fraternities to watch the frats get their new brothers! The Pike’s always have a fire truck and they blast everyone with water and the Fiji’s have a slip & slide and everyone gets completely soaked, screaming and cheering on their favorite fraternity. My sorority, Chi Omega, our tradition involves throwing the chapter President & Recruitment Chair into the lake before heading back to the house, and moving in our new sisters! Then we dry off, take bid day pics and have a barbeque! Bid Day is extremely exciting and full of tears and laughter. I love Bid Day!
