Executed Convict's Last Words a Shout Out to College Team

prisonA convicted killer from Oklahoma gave some unusual last words before his death on Oct. 26.

“Well, I’d like to say thank you to my family for being here and all my friends, and Boomer Sooner,” Jeffery Landrigan said, an obvious University of Oklahoma fan.

After the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a stay delaying his execution for a murder he comitted in 1989, 48-year-old Landrigan was put to death by lethal injection at a prison in Florence, Arizona.

He was given the injection after his last meal of steak, fried okra, french fries, ice cream and Dr. Pepper.

The day before Landrigan was scheduled to die, an Arizona federal judge blocked the execution. The judge said the state had obtained the lethal drug from a previously unidentified overseas source. He questioned whether or not the drug was safe, and said that the drug could result in a slower death.

Although the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was in agreement with the ruling, the nation’s high court upturned the decision on Landrigan’ s execution day.

“There is no evidence in the record to suggest that the drug obtained from a foreign source is unsafe,” the unsigned order said. “Speculation cannot substitute for evidence that the use of the drug is sure or very likely to cause serious illness and needless suffering.”‘

Since 1990, Landrigan had been on death row for his conviction of murdering a Phoenix man. Prosecutors said that the murder was part of a robbery.

Previously, he had escaped from the John Lilley Correctional Center in Boley, Oklahoma. Landrigan was convicted of second-degree murder in Washington County and was serving a 20-year sentence for the murder that occurred in 1982.

Landrigan’ s execution was the first to take place in Arizona since 2007.
