Republican Congresswoman Tells First Graders About Abortion

rep-jean-schmidtDuring a speech at a Cincinnati Catholic school, Republican congresswoman Jean Schmidt told a group of elementary school students about abortion. Students in the audience ranged from first to eighth grade, with children as young as six. The topic was not part of her address, but she introduced the topic which answering a question about how morals are related to legislation. Schmidt is a Catholic, and according to one of her spokespersons, “She received a follow-up question, which she answered consistent with Catholic teaching.”

The topic sparked more questions, and Schmidt defined abortion as the “taking of a child’s life in the mother’s womb” said the school’s principal, Dan Teller. “She indicated that abortion involves the killing of a child before it is born.”

Teller issued a letter of apology to parents, writing that Schmidt “was not invited to further any political agenda,” and that he was sorry “for any confusion or fear that this may elicit on the part of your child, and for the awkward position this may put you in of introducing a difficult issue at a time that may be premature for you.”

Schmidt is the incumbent in the upcoming congressional elections. She is running against Democrat Surya Yalamanchili. “I consider the Congresswoman’s comments to these children to be very concerning,” said Yalamachili. “It showed the same awful judgment that she has displayed in Washington.”

I think the Congresswoman spoke simply and honestly in response to a question put to her in an open forum. It’s too bad her political opponent Yalamachili couldn’t resist making the situation tawdry.

Roe v. Wade issues probably will be with us forever. But if you have watched your own children swimming in their mother womb before birth then you would understand congresswoman’s Schmidt’s position even if you do not agreed with it.
