Alex Trebek's Education Background

George Alexander “Alex” Trebek is a native Canadian who is best known for being the host of Jeopardy!. He has hosted Jeopardy! since 1984 and became a naturalized United States citizen in 1998. EDUinReview will now take a look at Trebek’s education background.

Trebek was born on July 22, 1940 in Sudbury, Ontario. He is the son of Lucille and George Edward Trebek. He attended a Jesuit school and graduated from Toronto’s Malvern Collegiate Institute in 1958. Later, he attended the University of Ottawa and graduated with a degree in philosophy.

Trebek was very involved while he was at theĀ  the University of Ottawa. He was an active member of the English Debating Society. He also began his career in the broadcast news industry at this time. He first started working as a newscaster and sportscaster at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

He also attended College Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean, a military school in Quebec. However, he only attended the school for six days. In an interview with Esquire, Trebek had this to say about his experience at College Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean:

“In the military they say, ‘We’re gonna break down your spirit in order to rebuild it.’ Don’t give me that bulls–t. I can take an order without you behaving like a jerk.”

Trebek first began hosting game shows in high school. He moved to the USA in 1973 and began working for NBC as the host of The Wizard of Odds, a new television game show. He also hosted High Rollers from 1974-1976 and 1978-1980. In 1984, he started hosted Jeopardy!, which he still hosts today.

In addition to hosting Jeopardy!, Trebek has appeared in many Colonial Penn Life Insurance commercials, hosted To Tell the Truth, and will guest star on How I Met Your Mother in December 2010.
