5 Healthcare Careers You Might Not Have Heard Of

As long as there are people on this planet there will be a need for healthcare. And as our population ages the need to fill those healthcare jobs will only increase over time.

Obviously doctors and nurses are the ones that immediately come to mind when we think about healthcare professionals, but it takes an army to make a hospital or clinic run efficiently and to provide quality care to the patients who need it.

But who are these people? If you’re interested in a career in healthcare but aren’t sure that the hands on aspect of it is right for you, these are five healthcare careers that pay well and are vital to the success of any healthcare facility.

1. Genetic Counseling

While a genetic counselor does need to have a master’s degree in their field, the actual work of a genetic counselor is rewarding and incredibly fascinating. A genetic counselor usually works in a hospital or clinic setting and assists patients and physicians by identifying genetic disorders that could potentially cause diseases. They also work with couples who may have a genetic abnormality that could be passed on to their children.

This is very sensitive work so in addition to extensive training in the science of human genetics one must also train as a counselor.

2. Healthcare Administrator

No business can function without a top-notch administrative team and the healthcare field is no different. A healthcare administrator manages the back office and clerical aspects of the clinic or hospital, including patient records, accounting, and case management.

Healthcare administrators might also work with insurance companies or with human resource departments in a variety of healthcare settings. This is a very versatile position that offers the person with the right training a number of different jobs to choose from.

3. Medical Device Repair

Medical technology has changed rapidly over recent years and the devices used today for diagnostic and treatment services are very complex pieces of machinery. If one of these machines fails for some reason it’s absolutely not cost-effective to buy a new one. Enter the medical device repair person.

Also referred to as biomedical equipment technicians, these people usually complete specialized training in electronics and the functionality related to the equipment they’ll work on, like MRI machines. Some cases can be urgent and the technician may be required to work during off hours but most technicians work typical daytime shifts and may work at several different hospitals or clinics.

4. Occupational Therapist

An occupational therapist is one of the most vital members to any large healthcare team. Someone in this position takes on several aspects of both a physical therapist and a mental health therapist, but their main focus is ensuring that patients are able to perform day to day to tasks and deciding what type of assistance they may need to accomplish that.

Some occupational therapists work with children who are developmentally delayed and assist them in achieving age appropriate milestones. Others work with stroke or accident victims to help them regain loss of fine motor skills. This job does require an advanced degree but it’s extremely rewarding work.

5. Medical Social Worker

A medical social worker is a specialized field that is all about assisting patients and their families by ensuring that their healthcare needs are met. In many situations, such as a severe illness or accident, a patient may not know what to do or how to find appropriate resources. This is where the medical social worker comes in.

The social worker acts as a patient advocate and works with doctors, home healthcare agencies, nursing homes and other health-related businesses to arrange for their client to have the equipment or treatment that they need. Many medical social workers also work with homeless or disadvantaged people to help them fill out the paperwork necessary to apply for government sponsored healthcare.

The healthcare workers like doctors and nurses are the ones that we see on the front lines, but those that work behind the scenes make their jobs possible. If you’re looking for a rewarding career in healthcare consider one of these five positions that are not only important but very inspiring as well.

Educational Background: What University did Colin Kaepernick go to?

Colin Kaepernick has proven one thing lately: he doesn’t always stand up for what he believes in. Recently at the center of American controversy, this 49ers player has chosen to sit out The Star-Spangled Banner.  He aims to use this anti-patriotic display to draw attention to racial inequality and police brutality across all fifty states.

Before his actions drew the attention of red-blooded Americans everywhere, and spread to other players in the NFL, Kaepernick led his team to Super Bowl XLVII in 2012. Long before recruiters came knocking at his door, Colin dreamed of football.

We will be examining the high school and college education of Colin Kaepernick on this edition of EduReview Educational Backgrounds.

Colin’s Personal Life

Born in Milwaukee on November 3rd of 1987, He spent a few weeks with his birth mother before being put up for adoption.  He was immediately taken in by Rick and Teresa Kaepernic. He went from being the biracial child of a single mother to the newest member of an upper-class family. Following the rest of his family, a four-year old Colin moved to California at the age of four. By the time he was eight, Colin impressed his local football and baseball league with his throwing power. Colin can seemingly predict the future. In fourth grade, he penned a letter that described his future as starting quarterback for the 49ers.

Where Did Colin Get His Education?

When he entered John H. Pitman High School, he proved himself a versatile star both on and off the green; he was a first team all-district, all-conference, and all-academic selection. His first recruitment round went less than swimmingly. After graduating from high school, Colin enrolled at the University of Nevada on a football scholarship. After the team’s longtime starter suffered a concussion, Kaepernick took over as the school’s number one quarter back. Colin valued his college education more than sports; this is easily proven by one choice. He turned down an offer from the Chicago Cubs to finish his degree in business management. When the 49ers came calling after his graduation, Colin did not make the same choice twice.

Huma Abedin Educational Background: What College did Huma Abedin Attend?

Huma Abedin University

The ex-wife of scandalized Anthony Weiner, Huma Abedin is a lot of things: a mother, a practicing Muslim, and the vice chairwoman for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. She has been characterized as indispensable to the former first lady and holds the title of “Traveling Chief of Staff.” This seems to be more than just media assumptions. In a 2007 Vogue article, Clinton was quoted as saying, ““Huma Abedin has the energy of a woman in her 20s, the confidence of a woman in her 30s, the experience of a woman in her 40s and the grace of a woman in her 50s… I am lucky to have had her on my team for a decade now.” Judging by Abedin’s recent promotion, those positive thoughts remain in place nine years later. Huma Abedin comes from a family of academics; both parents hold doctorates from the University of Pennsylvania. With this background in mind, it should not be surprising that Abedin earned her own college degree.

One of three children born to Sayed Abedin and Saleha Abedin, Huma moved from Kalamazoo to Saudi Arabia at just two years old. This time in the Middle East gave her a unique perspective issues plaguing Muslim minorities. After graduating primary education, Huma returned to the United States to attend George Washington University. A private research university in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of DC, GWU was established at the behest of our first president. During her time there, Huma worked as both a White House intern and a member of various Islamic-centric organization. After her college graduation, Huma quickly moved into a career in the political realm.

Paul Ryan’s Educational Background: Where did Paul Ryan go to College?

Paul Ryan College

Paul Ryan, the youngest speaker of the House since 1869, featured as vice president on Mitt Romney’s presidential bid in 2012. A staunch republican since his college days, Ryan helped pass various bipartisan budget cuts and advocates a policy of American Responsibility. Born and raised in a Catholic family, his religion still plays a heavy part in his political decision-making. In terms of other influences, Paul Ryan credits Ayn Rand’s objectivism for getting him interested in politics; while her views got him interested in politics, he later rejected them in favor of the milder views of Thomas Aquinas. Keeping his reading choices in mind, his educational choices might be obvious. We will be exploring his education in this entry of EduInReview.

Paul Ryan spent his earliest school days at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Janesville.  For his freshman year, he moved on to Joseph A. Craig High School.  Quite active in school and community, he spent much of his free time playing track and soccer.  In addition, he was elected both prom king and class president. After his graduation, Ryan chose to pursue a degree in economics and political science at Miami University. College did not see an end to his dedication to extracurricular activities. In his four years of undergraduate, he joined the College Republicans, became a member of Delta Tau Delta, interned at the local government office, and volunteered on John Boehner’s campaign.  After Ryan’s graduation in 1992, he accepted a position for legislative aide to local Senator Bob Kasten. In 1999, he became the US Representative for Wisconsin’s first congressional district. His star just kept rising. Now, as stated earlier, he holds the title of 54th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

Zayn Malik: Which University did he attend?

Zayn Malik College

Now running solo, Zayn Malik once belonged to one of the most popular boy bands in history: One Direction. This group of five formed after being teamed up on the UK’s version of the X-Factor; due to unnamed reasons, Zayn chose to escape the spotlight and leave the band in 2015. His first solo album, titled Mind of Mine, released worldwide on March of 2016.  His time in One Direction apparently left him with a lot of fans. Mind of Mine debuted on the top of the charts in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, and the United States. While he always had a love of singing and performing, Malik was not always a teenage heartthrob; he started out as a simple student at Lower Fields Primary school.

Zayn was born in Bradford on January 12th of 1993 to Yaser and Patricia Malik. While seemingly not overly religious himself, the entirety of the Malik family, including his three sisters, belong to the Muslim faith. Aside from being the motivation for many racially-motivated attacks, this fact does not feature too heavily into his story. After his graduation from Lower Fields Primary, he moved on to complete his education Tong High School.  Featuring state-of-the-art education and a modern style of teaching, it was at here that Malik discovered a deeper interest in music. During his time there, he appeared in a variety of school theatre productions and took a variety of performance classes.  Malik also began to author and write his own raps.

While he ultimately did not go on to college, he once planned to graduate and pursue an English degree at a nearby university.  Judging by his website, a touring circuit seems to be in his future.

Gary Johnson College and Educational Background

Gary Johnson University of New Mexico

The Libertarian Party’s presidential candidate for the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections, Gary Johnson once served as Governor of New Mexico.  Using his gubernatorial veto 200 times in his first six months, he managed to cut his state’s budget by ten percent and showcase his dedication to his own beliefs. Before his time as governor, Johnson was the owner of a multi-million-dollar construction company. All in all, he’s a rather busy man.

When not running for President or governor, he somehow finds time to write; he authored and published his first book, Seven Features of Good Government, in 2012. When not at work, it might be impossible to find this active senior at his desk.  This accomplished athlete, and former track star, climbed all 29,000 feet of Mount Everest in 2003. With all these things taking up his free time, it seems unlikely he will move beyond his current baccalaureate education.

One of three children born to Lorraine and Earl Johnson, Gary came into the world on January 1st of 1953.  From his birthplace of North Dakota, the family moved to New Mexico; this state played a much bigger role in Johnson’s life. After graduating from Sandia High School in 1971, Gary enrolled at the University of New Mexico to pursue his bachelor’s degree. Majoring in political science, he became active with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon. While with his fraternity, he met his ex-wife Dee Sims and laid the foundations for his construction business.

In 1975, Johnson graduated with a bachelors’ degree in political science. All the while, his construction business kept growing.  Finding the overnight success of his business burdensome, Johnson enrolled in a time management course at a night school. He credits this single course with developing his goal-setting and management abilities later in life. In conclusion, Johnson’s education aligned well with his ultimate goals and lends itself to his current candidacy. After all, what degree better prepares you for the campaign trail than political science?
