Dean Koontz Education Background

dean koontzBest-selling author Dean Koontz was born July 9, 1945 in Everett, Pennsylvania. He was the only child born to Ray and Florence Koontz, and grew up in abject poverty in the rural town of Bedford, Pennsylvania in the south central part of the state.

After graduation from high school, Dean left home and attended Shippensburg State College, which is now Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. While at Shippensburg, Dean majored in English and had a minor in communications. He also won a coveted award from Atlantic Monthly for Creative Writing while a student; no other student from Shippensburg had ever earned that honor. Also during his college years, he kept up his relationship with his high school sweetheart, Gerda Ann Cerra, and they married upon his college graduation in 1967. Read the rest of this entry »

B.F. Skinner Education Background

bf-skinnerPsychologist and writer, B.F. Skinner was born in 1904 to parents Grace and William Skinner in the town of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. B.F. had a younger brother, Edward, who he died when just 16 years old of a cerebral hemorrhage.

After high school, Skinner enrolled at Hamilton College in New York, with the dream of becoming a writer. He also became a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1926.  He then enrolled at Harvard University and graduated in 1931 with a Ph.D,  but elected to stay on as a researcher until 1936. Barbara Kingsolver Education Background

barbara-kingsolverWriter Barbara Kingslover was born in 1955 in Annapolis, MD, but spent her childhood in rural Kentucky. When she was seven, she and her family lived in the Congo briefly while her physician father and her mother worked in a medical camp.

After high school, Kingslover enrolled in DePauw University. While there, she won a musical scholarship and studied classical piano. Like many students of the time, she was an activist and protested against the war in Vietnam.

Soon realizing that the job market for musicians was very small, she changed her major to biology and earned a Bachelor in Science degree in 1977. She then spent a year living abroad in France before settling down in Tucson, Arizona, where she spent most of the next 20 years of her life. She earned a Master’s degree in evolutionary biology and ecology from the University of Arizona at Tucson during her time there. Read the rest of this entry »
