Motivational Speaker Talks to College Students About Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Elaine Williams Headshot For many students, the first time they will drink alcohol or experiment with drugs is during college. For some, the first time leads to a second and a third and a fourth, and before they realize it, they are heading down the road to substance abuse and addiction. Of course, students hear about the dangers of this path all the time, but these messages can be easy to ignore. Unless the message is coming from Elaine Williams, a comedian and motivational speaker who has recently been touring college campuses across the nation to talk about substance abuse and addiction.

“There is so much shame, darkness and isolation in being an addict,” Williams said. “Laughter is the opposite of that. It also releases endorphins. So, I don’t preach, lecture, point my finger or scare the students. I tell my story and how I overcame the abuses, but I also empathize and listen to the students. I get what they’re going through. There’s a lot of pressure to perform, be liked and feel part of a group.”

It seems that Williams’ message is getting through to those who see her presentation as well.

“Elaine was real and really funny,” said Steven, a student at Southwest Tennessee Community College. “She had our attention the whole time. I can tell she really cares about the students.”

Nude Facebook Photo Gets College Golfers Suspended

The Bethany College men’s golf team is giving Tiger Woods a run for his money. Though we don’t typically associate golf with scandal, it seems that sticky situations pop up every once in a while.

Golfers from Bethany, located in Linsborg, Kansas, posed nude with golf sports equipment strategically placed in front of their genitals and posted the photo on Facebook. John Daniels, Bethany’s athletic director, suspended team members for the next three tournaments.

“I had no idea they were doing it. After one of (the golfers) put it on Facebook, then it got sent to me.” said Daniels. “I’ve been around a long time and I think this is a case of young people who just don’t think beyond the moment and don’t realize who they’re hurting. Until someone sat them down and explained that they did something wrong, they didn’t have any idea, but I think they understand now.”

University of Missouri’s Shakespeare’s Pizza Wins Best College Food Contest

There are a few things that are inherent to any college campus: students, books, beer and greasy college grub. Just recently, ABC’s Good Morning America launched a “Best Bites: College Edition” challenge, where students voted for their favorite campus grub. In fact, more than 20,000 people voted for the best college food in America.

The competition was fierce, the food was greasy and Good Morning America’s co-anchor and judge, Ron Claiborne was quite stuffed following his cross country food fest.

Here is a look at the college culinary final four: Read the rest of this entry »
