Hazing Linked to FAMU Student’s Death

florida agricultural and mechanical university sealA memorial was held last Tuesday for a Florida A&M student whose death may have been caused by hazing.

Twenty-six-year old drum major, Robert Champion, became ill and died unexpectedly after a football game on Nov. 19. He was found on a bus in Orlando Saturday night after the school’s football team lost the game.

Police said that Champion had been vomiting and complained that he couldn’t breathe on the night he died.

“The investigation indicates that hazing was involved in the events that occurred prior to the 911 call for assistance,” Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said last Tuesday. “Any death that occurs as the result of hazing is a third degree felony. Anyone who participates in such events can be criminally charged.”

Champion’s cause of death is still considered inconclusive and further testing will be needed to find the exact cause.

As of now, “any and all performances and engagements for bands and other ensembles under the auspices of the Music Department, including the Marching 100 (are suspended,)” FAMU President James Ammons announced Tuesday.

The Top 5 College Fight Songs

Almost every school has a fight song that students and fans sing at sporting events. These fight songs have two main purposes: get the home-team excited and intimidate the competition. Read the rest of this entry »

A Senior’s Farewell to High School Football

This past week has been the craziest week for marching band.

Monday we had Band-o-rama (which is when all the bands in USD 259 get together to perform their half time shows), Wednesday we had a marching competition in Andover, KS and on Halloween, of all days, we had our final football game. Unless we win and go on to regionals.

But the thought that this is not only my last football game, but my final performance with marching band is a sad thought for me. For three out of the four years of my high school experience, band has been a big part of a lot of what I’ve experienced. Although I’m not too worried about how well I play my clarinet, but rather I have enjoyed band mostly because of the friends I have made through it and the experiences I have had while in band.
