How to Find Love on a College Campus

couple loveHow many popular chick-flicks today focus on a happy couple meeting in college, falling in love, and living happily ever after? I have to admit, the majority of my favorite movies have this exact plot line. So, is it any wonder that many students come to college expecting to learn the skills for their future jobs, have a lot of fun, and meet the person of their dreams?

Unfortunately, finding love on a college campus is a little harder than they show on the cinema screen. However, it is not impossible. Follow these tips to find love on a college campus.

Look for love in the right places. Sure, you might meet someone special in a bar, but what are you likely to have in common (except a shared love of tequila, perhaps)? Instead, try to look for someone who shares a similar interest with you. You could join a club or an organization on campus whose members share a passion. If you meet someone in this setting, you will have something to talk about besides which alcohol tastes the best mixed with Coke. Read the rest of this entry »

iPhone Users More Promiscuous than Other Smart Phone Users

iphone sexyI have always thought of the iPhone as being cooler, more advanced, and just a better phone than the brick my mom carries around and calls a cell phone. However, I did not have any idea that the iPhone was actually sexier…or at least its users are.

A new study by OkCupid revealed that iPhone users have more sexual partners than other smart phone users. Blackberry and Andriod users came in second and third, respectfully, in the study.

Okay, so how exactly did they determine these findings?

“We crossed all kinds of user behaviors with the camera models and found we had data on the number of sexual partners for 9,785 people with smart phones,” according to the OkCupid blog. “We dropped what we found into Excel, and voila.” Read the rest of this entry »

Hooking Up Versus Dating

What does this couple really think about college dating practices?

Isn’t it sad that we have sex with a guy before we consider dating him?”

One of my friends recently asked me this question. We preceded to discuss it, and determined that, although the random hook-up can be fun, we would prefer to be in a relationship. As it turns out, we are not alone.

A recent study at James Madison University found that college students have twice as many hook-ups as actual dates. And, like my friend and I, most students, male and female, preferred a traditional date to the random hook-up.

The Sex Education Debate: Abstinence-Only vs. Safe Sex

Few public policy subjects stir the pot as fiercely as abstinence-only education. Proponents of abstinence education hold to the belief that it is not up to people outside of the family to discuss sensitive matters like sexuality. Some also believe that if schools are discussing and even handing out contraception, they are tacitly encouraging sexual activity.gender

On the other side of the coin, those who favor comprehensive sex education take what they would say is a realist viewpoint, in that once puberty hits, many kids are going to have sex whether the rest of us like it or not. Hormones dictate the outcome, not a taught moral code.

As is the case in many debates, both sides of the sex education debate have merits and faults. But first, let’s take a trip back to when schools started their sexual curriculum. Read the rest of this entry »

Practicing Safe Sex on College Campuses

Books, beer and sex. Those are three near givens on any college campus. But what most college students don’t realize is that when it comes to beer and sex, there is a lot more at risk than just a hangover and a broken heart. College students are one of the most at-risk groups for sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs).condom

But before panic sets in, here is what you need to know about protecting yourself, increasing your sex-ed knowledge, and lowering your risk for becoming just another statistic.

Risk Factors

There are two primary risk factors for STDs among students:

First, college students enjoy a remarkably easy access to alcohol, which significantly impairs judgment and in many cases, leads to sex.

Second, the lack of  practicing risk-reduction behaviors like safe-sex or getting tested regularly also amps up risk. This second risk factor can be intimately related to alcohol as the effects of booze contributes to whether or not someone is coherent enough to put on a condom or inquire about their partner’s sexual health. Tufts University Limits When Students Can Have Sex

A new policy at Tufts University limits when students can have sex in the dorm rooms.

Living with someone in a small dorm room can be a challenging experience. Roommates often annoy each other. One roommate might be a night owl and the other an early bird. One might like to blare rap and the other likes soft classical music. But imagine how awkward it would be to come back to your room and find your roommate having sex in your room.

Evidently that exact experience has been occurring more and more often at Tufts University. Tufts had to recently create a new policy that says students cannot have sex while their roommate is present. Also, one roommate’s sexual habits should not impede the others privacy, study, or sleeping habits. Read the rest of this entry »
