Should High School Classes Start Later in the Day?

Sleeping in is just for weekends, or so we thought. The editors of MacLeans, a Canadian public affairs magazine, think that high school students should be able to sleep in and have classes start at 10 a.m. The editorial reviewed students at Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute in Toronto. They are already in their second year in late-start classes.

It’s no surprise that teenagers like to sleep in, but studies show that there’s a biological reason for them not being early birds.

“It is starting to look as though a forward shift in sleep patterns is a natural accompaniment to sexual maturation—not just in humans, but in mammals generally; rats and monkeys, it seems, engage in their own version of what parents witness in their recalcitrant 16-year-olds,” the editors at MacLeans stated in a recent article.

Current Trends Concerning Teens and Sexual Activity

sexMany young adults become sexually active during their teenage years. Sex is a natural human urge, so it is not surprising that many teens want to explore this unknown territory.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, 46 percent of teens have had sex at least once between the ages of 15 and 19. Not surprisingly, the percentage of sexually active teens increases with age: only 13 percent of 15-year-olds have had sex, but 70 percent of 19-year-olds have had sex.

Sexual education varies across the country. Some schools promote abstinence-only sexual education.  Others also promote contraceptive use to protect against sexually transmitted disease and pregnancies.

3 Teenagers Dead After Being on a Facebook Hit List

crime sceneThe town of Puerto Asis in southwest Columbia is on high alert after three teenagers have been murdered in the last 10 days after their names appeared on a kill list, along with 66 others, that was posted on the social networking website, Facebook.
