College Students Using Adderall to Study for Exams

It used to be that when a student had a test or a paper coming up, he would start preparing for it weeks in advance. He would find motivation to study from within by wanting to do well in a class, and that motivation alone would be enough to help him stay concentrated and driven during his study sessions.

Flash forward to 2011, and there’s a new factor in students’ studying habits. It’s not what every student does, but many do, include Jared Gabay, a senior at Auburn University. What could this new factor be? Gabay and many other students use a “study drug” to give them a little extra study boost.

“I’m more driven,” said Gabay about how he feels when he takes Adderall, a prescription drug that was created to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. “I don’t focus on anything else [except my studies when I have taken an Adderall]. If I have a paper, that’s all I’m doing. No distractions, no socializing, just on with it.”

Many students on campuses across the nation are using Adderall and other ADHD medications, such as Ritalin, to help them study.

Many College Campuses are Now 100 Percent Tobacco-Free

Everyone knows that you can’t smoke inside a college building or within 25-feet of any entrance door. However, some college campuses are now becoming entirely smoke-free in an effort to create a healthier and tobacco-free campus.

Last summer, students and staff members at the University of Kentucky patrolled the campus, and when they saw anyone smoking – student, employee, or visitor – they politely asked the smoker to dispose of his/her cigarette. In return for the cigarette, the members of Tobacco-free Take Action! would give the smokers information about resources on campus that would help them quit smoking.

The events at the University of Kentucky are not new to college campuses: there have been more than 500 campuses in the USA that have become 100 percent smoke-free or tobacco-free. There have been 120 campuses that adopted the smoke-free policy in the past year alone.

2010 NBA Draft Roundup: Kentucky Steals the Show

The NBA Draft took place in New York last night, and the first overall pick, John Wall of Kentucky, set a tone for the first round. Every time you looked up, there was another Wildcat walking up to the podium.john-wall-washington-wizards

After Wall went at #1 to the Washington Wizards, fellow freshman DeMarcus Cousins went to the Sacramento Kings at #5, junior Patrick Patterson went to Houston at #14, freshman Eric Bledsoe went to the Thunder at #18 and freshman Daniel Orton went 29th to the Magic giving Kentucky an astounding five first-round selections.

It was reminiscent of the 2005 draft, when four North Carolina Tar Heels were selected in the first 14 picks.

When I think about the group of Kentucky players, a thought creeps into my head: has the class designation lost all meaning in D-I college basketball? Read the rest of this entry »

John Wall, the #1 College Basketball recruit, just signed with the University of Kentucky.

The number one high school basketball player, John Wall, has agreed to play college ball for the University of Kentucky. Wall has been the top high school player in the nation for over a year, according to Rivals.com.

“In the end, I just felt I wanted to play for Coach Cal,” Wall said. “Coaches give different visions of what they can do for you when they talk to you. And all of those are impressive, but my long relationship with Coach Cal and what he can do for me in his program was the main thing. It came down to where my heart was, though. Every time I talked about schools, Coach Cal was the first thing that I always talked about.” Read the rest of this entry »
