Alpha Omicron Pi is currently a member of the National Panehellenic Conference and is an international sorority. The founding women met in the Columbia Law Library to start their fraternity. The founders were Stella George Stern Perry, Helen St. Clair Mullan, Elizabeth Heywood Wyman and Jessie Wallace Hughan. At the time of the organization’s inception, the term sorority was not used, so Alpha Omicron Pi was founded as a fraternity for women. Alpha Omicron Pi started their quest for expansion on the national level in 1898. The first expanded chapter was the Pi chapter which was at Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans. Sophie Newcomb College was part of Tulane University.
