HISTORY
Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority was founded on the campus of Longwood College (now known as Longwood University) in Farmville, Virginia on November 15, 1901. The founders of Alpha Sigma Alpha all entered the school in the fall of 1901 and decided to form their own sorority rather than taking invitations from other established sororities. Those founders were Virginia Boyd Noell, Juliette Hundley Gilliam, Calva Watson Wootton, Louise Cox Carper, and Mary Williamson Hundley.alpha sigma alpha

Early on in the sorority’s existence, it was decided that the only schools eligible for chapters of Alpha Sigma Alpha are those that were teacher’s colleges, or had a college of education within them. Alpha Sigma Alpha became a member of the National Panehellenic Council in 1947.

PHILANTHROPY
The philanthropies of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority are the Special Olympics and the S. June Smith Center.
