Alpha Sigma Tau sorority was founded on the campus of Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) on November 4, 1899. At the time of its founding there were three other active sororities in existence. Alpha Sigma Tau is the third oldest sorority in existence.alpha sigma tau
The sorority was originally created for those students who were becoming teachers and the organization gained membership into the Association of Education Sororities. The founders of the sorority were Mable Chase, Ruth Dutcher, Harriet Marx, May Gebhart, Eva O’Keefe, Adriance Rice, Helen M. Rice and Mayene Tracy.
Originally the colors chosen for Alpha Sigma Tau were purple and gold. However, another sorority had taken those colors so the founders instead chose emerald green and gold as the official colors of the sorority. During the first year of the Alpha Sigma Tau’s existence, there was little activity that took place. In the second year Alpha Sigma Tau received their charter and new members joined. When the Association of Education Sororities merged with the National Panhellenic Conference in 1951, Alpha Sigma Tau became a member of the NPC.
The official philanthropies for Alpha Sigma Tau are Habitat for Humanity and Pine Mountain Settlement School.
