With only 2K left to pay on a 20K ACS loan I wound up on permanent disability. I received a letter from Nelnet forgiving the 2K based on my disabled status. Then I received a letter stating they were monitoring my income and might disqualify me. Then I received a letter reconfirming the forgiveness, followed by another which threatened legal action if I didn’t report in to them with my income information (I only get my social security which they surely know). I have an entire folder of Nelnet letters doing this schizophrenic back ad forth and may just write FUCK YOU on the back of their next letter with a check for 2K.

I was given bad advice in 2006 regarding a loan consolidation program, and now with almost 120 payments (never once late) I should be eligible for loan forgiveness (because I work for a non-profit). Today, I just found out that when my loan was consolidated, it wasn’t done properly – therefore, the 120 payment rule starts NOW (not in 2006 when I consolidated for this very purpose)! Do not choose Nelnet as your service provider – bad advice from inexperienced people.

Dissatisfied Customer

Thumbs Down

The customer service is stunted. They have a script that they follow and seldom deviate from. I have saved my conversations to learn the right trigger words that elicit the correct scripted response so that I can then steer them in the direction I need for help. The most irritating thing at the moment is that I am making extra payments while enrolled in Kwikpay which pushes out my due date no matter what I do. They say it is within 30 days of the due that they cannot adjust my due date on that loan because they cannot get me a statement on time. Which I odd as I receive e-statements. So every month after the Kwikpay goes through I pull up my old script with the right key words so that I can get the correct response and move from there. Today I went in and missed used one word and that added time to the conversation. I was once told that I should not be mad as these people make nine dollars an hour. I found that odd. I make less than that at my part-time job. Does that excuse me from doing decent work too?

There should be recourse against a company like Nelnet. They seem to be determined to charge student loan borrowers as much interest as possible. I’ve never seen a company so determined to avoid taking my payments every month in an effort to accrue more interest and keep me in debt. I have to fight them and their crappy system every month to make a payment. Their Kwik-Pay option discourages overpaying by NOT making a payment even when the user orders a monthly amount. I swear, they do it on purpose to keep the interest gravy train rolling.

They also make it impossible to tell how much you owe and where the interest is coming from. Not transparent at all. And the loan amount never seems to budge, no matter how much I over pay. Interest, interest, interest. I wish I could figure out how they are doing it, but every time I call I get transferred and corporate doublespeak and they refuse to explain anything, all the while reading from some training manual that teaches them how to continue their cultish charade of customer service.

Companies like this need a light shone on their nefarious practices and exposed for the frauds and cheats that they really are.

Terrible experience with Nelnet. Their IT glitch automatically deleted my bank account that I had provided them for direct debit and also erased all the payment history for 3 months. They were about to report me to the credit bureau saying that my account is past due for 119 days! I spent 2 hours with them on the phone and finally everything was corrected. They had no idea what was going on. I don’t know how many people were affected.

Then she continued with a very rude tone in her voice, to the point where she was almost looking to ARGUE with me about the double transaction instead of helping me! When I noticed that the autopay didn’t work I tried to -manually- pay my bill and THAT DIDN’T WORK either. So then they call me saying my bill is late. The website is very confusing and I’m sure they could have done a better job with it. One one page they give a summary of my monthy loan payments, which is different from the payment amount on another section of the site. They should match up!

I called a representative and I didn’t have to wait long, and the guy was suprisingly easy to understand which makes me wonder why the website is so misleading.

Apparently the numbers were different because I have to make 2 separate payments each month? Weird.

I heard many terrible things about this site, and I’ve only started repaying loans so I hope they have improved.

I called my bank and asked for an unauthorized withdraw on my account to get that payment back since they will not credit that for the next payment (that’s right, next month I’ll have to pay again).

Nelnet has the most horrifically retarded customer service, with laughably classic phone system nightmare that is specifically designed to never connect you to the real person (unlike companies that think, like Apple). It took Sherlock Holmes deciphering on like a 4th try to actually get to their rep. For the past week all I’m trying to do is get them to communicate like humans and confirm my loan payoff that’s been paid 2 days ago – trying with both email and phone, its like I’m dealing with bafoons not people. I think speaking to a representative at Nelnet is highly overrated. These guys are MORONS; particularly Adam (x809154), who claims to be the highest ranking manager in the operation. I doubt it.

I tried to change my auto-debit payment amount for December only, in order to free up some cash for Christmas. I canceled Kwik Pay and did a one-time payment of the lesser amount. On Dec 24, they took BOTH payments out of my account, leaving me with a trail of bounced checks from Christmas purchases. At least my Nelnet account says it isn’t due again until 2/24/11. You would think it would be simple enough to reverse the second payment they took out of my account…but NO!

Adam now says it will take 10-30 days to credit the money to my bank, because it was MY error, and that it would be faster to have my bank dispute the charge as unauthorized.

Idiots!

So, TO TALK TO A PERSON, to re-iterate:

There is no way to actually make a payment, or increase your payments, on your account if you are even remotely ahead on them. I have tried calling the only phone number I can find on the website and it is an automated black hole. I have tried every prompt and there is abolsutely NO way to get a hold of a person. When I try to do a check by phone it tells me there isn’t a payment due at this time and HANGS UP ON ME!!! I sent an email request 2 days ago stating EXACTLY what I wanted assistance with and recieved a cookie cutter response that “since there is no payment due at this time I can not make automated payments without an override” – which I’ve already figured out on my own. My request was for someone to contact me, since it is impossible for me to contact them, so that I can obtain this override and begin to make automated payments on my account. I can not believe how difficult they make it for customers to pay off their loans early. That should be illegal!!!

Just wanted to report that John’s method of getting through to a person does work. It is irritating to have to listen through all that account information, but it does get you through to a live person to talk to. She answered my question in about 3 minutes once I was able to talk to her, though she didn’t seem that surprised to hear that it took awhile to get to her. I suspect that being an employee there is a tough job.

So, TO TALK TO A PERSON, to re-iterate:

From main menu, press option 4 then press option 1 to review all loans. (You may have to press option 1 again here) You have to listen through every loan group being read off by the computer voice. Then at end you get option to speak to human or go back to menu – press option 1!

Good luck!

This company offers the worst customer service I have ever seen. Ever. To not have any real person to aid with customer questions is appalling.

I cannot believe the unprofessional and absolute ignorance of this company!!! Like so many others, I have called and called AND called, but to no avail. The numbers called ONLY provide you with an automated voice – absolutely no way to speak to a live person. This is unbelievable!!! How can so many people be angry with a company and a company not respond to individual’s needs and requests? They have no problem sending and resending notices requesting payment and hitting you with late fees, interests, etc., but they refuse to speak with individuals. I agree with others – I loathe this company, they are MORANS, and if they refuse to answer my letters or e-mails, or call me, to hell with them.

I am demanding that someone contact me at my number in an attempt to resolve my concerns. . . we’ll see.

The customer service sucks. It is really obvious how bad there communication with the customers are. It took me through so many options and numbers just to speak with a associate about my problem. This is the only issue i had so far. This is ridiculous.

figured out how to get a real person every time. call the 888 number, select 1 for english, and when it asks for you to enter your acct #, just sit there. It will ask a couple more times and when you enter nothing it will transfer you. then you have to hit 1 to tell them you want an account rep. lame but at least its a work around.

I don’t like Nelnet for a number of reasons. The first is the fact that you can never get ah hold of a human during office hours. Second, when you get help from them on an issue via email, you get a response from different people every time your correspond with them and they aren’t helpful at all. Third, they have bad timing when they send you letters about the direct debit, they ask for 10 business days in advance for payment changes to be made, yet you get the letter that is dated five days before the postmark and it arrives in your mailbox four days before the next payment is suppose to come out! They got paid twice one month because they didn’t cancel the direct debit payment in time because they didn’t give me enough time to respond to their deadline and I had already paid them two weeks prior! Horrible company to deal with. Here is a direct number to a call center in NE, 402-458-2370, hit 0 and ask for someone to speak to about what your issue is. They are nice and helpful when you get a hold of someone, but their automated system and the way they do business is frustrating!

Thanks to Jay, after 30 minutes of listening to a robot go through my 14 loans I got to talk to a real person. He was very friendly but could not give me an answer to my question. I asked that he put a note on my account in case I have to call back in the next few days to get my payment fixed.

I followed Jays directions and got through to a person and they were very nice. But they need to have an option in the main menu. Seriously!

So thanks Jay!

The customer service sucks. It takes 20 minuts to get a human I figured out how after an hour. This is how you do it. You have to press option 4 then press option 1 to review loans you have to listen through every loan group being read off by a slow robot I have 7 of them. Then at end you get option to speak to human or go back to menu. First time I got disconnected by nel net when I tried human I had to go through all this again but I got a human. I told them how ridiculous this is they said nelnet has recently realized how there is no human option.

Something needs to be done about this. I have to sit through all these options for crap that has nothing to do with my question. I work my a** off so I can pay them back I don’t need a hour of my night taken so I can ask a simple question.

Hope this helps someone.

Netlnet has been servicing my loans for over 10 years. During those 10 years they have always been helpful and when there was a problem, there has been someone else more knowledgeable to look into the details.

Today I tried to call and am absolutely surprised and now livid that there is no customer service representative available. To the 1st post-er from May 19th, 2009… THE COMPANY HAS CHANGED and is now operating as a rogue internet company akin to the irresponsible companies hiding from any customers they receive business from. BMG music comes to mind and they were forced by law to post a customer service phone number with real operators available. That this is the same tactic being tested by a student loan provider is Absolutely appalling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Something legally substantial does need to happen NOW!!!!

Please post your email on here if you would like to be part of a business complaint on behalf of holders of student loans with nelnet, with legal representation.

The practices they are employing are illegal; namely, preventing payments by being unavailable.

I don’t think there is a REAL person at Nelnet. I have been unable to talk to a REAL person through the terrible automated phone line. I’ve read on other message boards that there may be a class-action lawsuit filed based on Nelnets’ mis-calculation of interest charges – no surprise there!

My loan got sold to Nelnet. I had a problem that I tried to get help with, and the phone number they provided never gave me an option to talk to an actual person. It’s all automated and no help whatsoever. Then when I finally resorted to e-mail, I was told they couldn’t help me. Then they told me to call that same stupid 800 number that I had tried in the first place, which got me nowhere.

This company is an absolute joke… They need to be reported to the Better Business Bureau. What can we do? I want to get out of my loan with them and have it serviced elsewhere! There customer service is the worst I have ever dealt with. 4 months ago they said they would do direct withdrawlal from me, then they just stopped said it was my fault and say I have to pay all kinds of ridiculous fees, etc. They are so bad I almost want to cry. Get a student loan shouldnt be this frustrating.

Their methods of communication are TERRIBLE. After Nelnet bought my loan from Great Lakes, they sent a letter (after 4 months of perfectly fine automatic withdrawals) stating that I had requested my automatic payments to be stopped (which I had NOT requested). Tried calling their customer “service” phone line – did not even get to speak to a live person to explain what was going on – when the robot voice on the other end said they were connecting me to an operator, they DISCONNECTED the call. RIDICULOUS company and i HATE dealing with them.

Nelnet is a horrible company that seems to be on a mission to screw over student borrowers. I dealt with them in 2001-2003. I only got statements saying I was passed due. The customer service rep had me make a large payments via phone so I didn’t default on the loan. For 3 months I made payments only to find out the loan had been sold internally so I was making payments to the wrong nelnet. Their customer service told me I had already defaulted on the loan. I ended up paying off the loan through the state of michigan collection agency.

When I went to grad school I made sure to avoid nelnet. However, the Dept of Ed recently sold my loan to nelnet. When I received notification (not a statement) I went online to discover I was already past due on my monthly payment.

I hate this company, they are a joke. I am thinking about just telling them to keep there loan and never pay them anouther dime. Nelnet has failed to send me any paper bills or statements after my asking on 3 separate occasions. I get nothing from them, I just get online every month and throw money at them. When i first got out of school and called nelnet to check into consolidation, they told me they had recently closed their consolidation department. I have several small loans with different rates. I would advise to find a better company.

Nelnet is a horrible company. All banks would do well to find another company to manage their student loan accounts. I am a co-signer and ultimately responsible for payments and I find that Nelnet agents are rude and authoritarian. Nelnet communicates very poorly with co-signers resulting in unnecessary payment problems. Nelnet communicates extremely well with the credit reporting agencies to ruin credit scores even when small balances are due. I believe that Nelnet chooses to create problems whenever possible because reasonable communication can prevent them

I’ve had a completely positive experience with Nelnet. After graduation they helped me consolidate what was a mess of student loans and establish a reasonable payment to one source.
