Common Misspellings
Nel net, Nellnet, Nellent
For a program aimed at international students, paying abroad (not in the US) was seriously difficult. When we tried to contact Nelnet for advice the staff was slow at responding and very unhelpful. I would not recommendd

With only 2K left to pay on a 20K ACS loan I wound up on permanent disability. I received a letter from Nelnet forgiving the 2K based on my disabled status. Then I received a letter stating they were monitoring my income and might disqualify me. Then I received a letter reconfirming the forgiveness, followed by another which threatened legal action if I didn’t report in to them with my income information (I only get my social security which they surely know). I have an entire folder of Nelnet letters doing this schizophrenic back ad forth and may just write FUCK YOU on the back of their next letter with a check for 2K.

if you think customer service from another country is bad, wait till you have to deal with a rep. from nelnet. Talk slow like your talking to a second grader stay calm and hope that the intern on the other end is not from an other planet.

I was given bad advice in 2006 regarding a loan consolidation program, and now with almost 120 payments (never once late) I should be eligible for loan forgiveness (because I work for a non-profit). Today, I just found out that when my loan was consolidated, it wasn’t done properly – therefore, the 120 payment rule starts NOW (not in 2006 when I consolidated for this very purpose)! Do not choose Nelnet as your service provider – bad advice from inexperienced people.
Dissatisfied Customer
The customer service is stunted. They have a script that they follow and seldom deviate from. I have saved my conversations to learn the right trigger words that elicit the correct scripted response so that I can then steer them in the direction I need for help. The most irritating thing at the moment is that I am making extra payments while enrolled in Kwikpay which pushes out my due date no matter what I do. They say it is within 30 days of the due that they cannot adjust my due date on that loan because they cannot get me a statement on time. Which I odd as I receive e-statements. So every month after the Kwikpay goes through I pull up my old script with the right key words so that I can get the correct response and move from there. Today I went in and missed used one word and that added time to the conversation. I was once told that I should not be mad as these people make nine dollars an hour. I found that odd. I make less than that at my part-time job. Does that excuse me from doing decent work too?
Maura
Very rude and not helpful!
Alan
Definitely having problems with this service after my loans were transferred here. Taking forever to update my payments on income based repayment plan after sending in updated income twice. Also taking forever to process my payment that I made online.
Chad
Very unhelpful service. They could not answer a single question without putting me on hold for extended periods of time.
Jeremy
Ever since NELNET took over my student loans it has been nothing but problems. Funds depositing into other peoples accounts, interest being incorrectly calculated. Wish these pricks would have a little taste of there own medicine. They have no business touching anything federal related. As mentioned ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE
Nina
Nelnet does not update payments on the payment schedule information in a timely manner. Please remember to print out your statement and your payment documentation each month so that you have back up for when they oh-so-conveniently screw up your account and charge you fees.
Trina
There should be recourse against a company like Nelnet. They seem to be determined to charge student loan borrowers as much interest as possible. I’ve never seen a company so determined to avoid taking my payments every month in an effort to accrue more interest and keep me in debt. I have to fight them and their crappy system every month to make a payment. Their Kwik-Pay option discourages overpaying by NOT making a payment even when the user orders a monthly amount. I swear, they do it on purpose to keep the interest gravy train rolling.
They also make it impossible to tell how much you owe and where the interest is coming from. Not transparent at all. And the loan amount never seems to budge, no matter how much I over pay. Interest, interest, interest. I wish I could figure out how they are doing it, but every time I call I get transferred and corporate doublespeak and they refuse to explain anything, all the while reading from some training manual that teaches them how to continue their cultish charade of customer service.
Companies like this need a light shone on their nefarious practices and exposed for the frauds and cheats that they really are.
alyssa
I never heard of nelnet until recently. I got an email saying I’m one month behind on my payment and I was thinking to myself I graduated in 2012 why would you wait a whole year to tell me I’m a month behind. then I get a lot of phone calls from them saying they need my adress and my social security. I don’t know what to do they keep harassing me I only made account with fafsa and I notice when they call most of the time it’s a machine.
Elsa Tolossa
Tried to fax and email my 1040 and they did not receive it …the agents just tell you sorry we did not receive it ….did it twice !
they have these young kids who have no clue what they are doing IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING ! THEY SUCK !!
sadsfds
Rude customer service, bad website design, delayed payment schedule. This is a fraud company.
william
I got transferred here from the regular federal loan site. Terrible experience and terrible customer service. Not to mention they take forever to process a payment.
I am putting absurd amounts of money into my loans every month to pay it off as soon as possible, just so i dont have to deal with them anymore.
MD
Terrible experience with Nelnet. Their IT glitch automatically deleted my bank account that I had provided them for direct debit and also erased all the payment history for 3 months. They were about to report me to the credit bureau saying that my account is past due for 119 days! I spent 2 hours with them on the phone and finally everything was corrected. They had no idea what was going on. I don’t know how many people were affected.
Nick
Screw nelnet! I had to submit payment four times online before finally accepted and when it was it charged 3 times… so I called nelnet.. lady on phone told me they could do refunds or anything bc it had overdrafted my bank acc.. needless to say. Poor company and website very bad handling of business with phone too
Jen
Stay away from these clowns!!!!! They withdrawl more than you authorize!! There online payment schedule doesn’t reflect when and how much they actually withdrawl. When you speak to them about the issue it’s never there fault. I asked to be transferred to a manager and the person I spoke with REFUSED. I asked for his name and he gave me John T. Refused to give me his full name, but these clowns can have my info and do whatever they please to do. Poor customer service. Scam artists at there finest!!!
Carlos
These people are idiots and do not have policies in place to help people, only to prey upon them.

my loan was suppose to be discharged do to my disabilty, now I ‘m gettings letters from Nelnet demanded full payments of interest and principal.whats wrong with this picture.
cyrus
I have paid over 5000 for my loan in past 7 years they toke over 4000 dollars for interest!!!!!
They are very Unprofessional for customer service, and greedy when come to treat business. I would never recommend student, under graduate or graduate do business with them. It is simple to believe me, just read above feedbacks. We do not want anybody else to enter and severely suffer of their financial trap . When it come financial decision making, wise person use other people advice and experiences instead of experience himself or herself, but decision is yours.
Tony
Horrible company. Avoid them at all costs.
KT
Had an issue with overpayment because one of my transactions was never posted to my account, so I ended up paying twice. Called customer service, and their representative sounded nice UNTIL I told her about my issue. The FIRST thing she tried to do was insist that it wasn’t Nelnet’s fault. Then she continued with a very rude tone in her voice, to the point where she was almost looking to ARGUE with me about the double transaction instead of helping me! Finally I managed to ask about getting a refund, which is the reason I called in the first place.
I never want to deal with Nelnet again.
Brian
The Dept of Ed is using Nelnet to “service” my student loans and my loan was transferred without my knowledge. Once I started trying to make payments it is impossible. Nelnet’s website is garbage, the auto-pay has failed no less than 4 times now, with them trying to help me fix it when I call in. When I noticed that the autopay didn’t work I tried to -manually- pay my bill and THAT DIDN’T WORK either. So then they call me saying my bill is late. I’m trying to buy a house and these morons are trying to ruin me. I’m complaining to my congressman. This is ridiculous.
some guy
3 days ago i owed less than 100 for march. today i went on to pay and it was over 200. when i asked what happened they said i really own about 130. I asked how I was supposed to know this and they said there was a malfunction! “it happens” Your money is not safe here plain an simple.
Anon
Poor servicer with non-functional website and no customer support
jen
This is a terrible company. You definitely do not want to take out a loan with them. They have rude customer service representatives, terrible wait time, and the worst website in existence. I feel like they purposely fail to process payment, claiming that there is problem, to blow up your balance with interest. For everyone else, if you see Nelnet, run away, FAR away!
Vcorbin
They are TERRIBLE!!! Don’t give them one cent…you’d be better off going to the Mob,
sasha
The website is very confusing and I’m sure they could have done a better job with it. One one page they give a summary of my monthy loan payments, which is different from the payment amount on another section of the site. They should match up!
I called a representative and I didn’t have to wait long, and the guy was suprisingly easy to understand which makes me wonder why the website is so misleading.
Apparently the numbers were different because I have to make 2 separate payments each month? Weird.
I heard many terrible things about this site, and I’ve only started repaying loans so I hope they have improved.
Lis
Waited on hold for 65 minutes for an operator – there was not any music, no automated voice – customer service is non existent. Read other comments, used the number Crissy added from BBB (402-458-2370) and was able to get through.
steven
Absolutly atrocious! horrible in every way! This place needs to be shut down, website is terrible, customer service is nonexistant.
Chloe
Agreed with what most of you all wrote here; HORRIBLE company, horrible website, and probably the worst at customer service! They make it nearly impossible to speak to a real person.I’ve tried three times to fax them some documents needed for a forebearance and the fax rings and rings. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY!!
Christina
UGH!!!! All I want to do is look at my loan overview to see when my next payment is due and what’s this Nelnet..my DOB and SSN don’t match what you have in your system so you won’t let me log in…I know my info is correct and you endlessly implore me to “try again” or “contact you” both are an utter useless waste of my time!! I HATE NELNET!!!!!!!
Crissy
Okay so I called a different number from the BBB 402-458-2370 and got much better results! I recommend calling that # then press zero for operator- very helpful and Todd was able to answer all my questions and helped tremendously 🙂
Crissy
I’ve been on hold for over 14 mins…really?? All I want to do is make a payment…no one’s answering! I hate nelnet!!
LKC
Absolutely awful service! Nelnet is cumbersome and user UN-friendly! It’s design is to milk as much profit out of the college educated underclass as it can. F**king corporate shills!
kris
sallie mae sold half my loans to the goverment then they pawned it off on nelnet. i set up my online account for the first time and made a payment no problem. then next time it asked me security questions that wasnt in the setup. impossible to get online, impossible to get ahold of someone, and impossible to navigate the maze of a automated phone service.
worst thing i was ever forced into.
harvir
worst mistake i ever made in my life dealing with this F*** company. 200% negative feedback
John
Just like Tym said above, I had cancelled my Kwik Pay in 05/2009 since I didn’t have any payment due until 02/2011, but the Kwik Pay got turned on automatically and took 2 payments! And Adam came to the phone line and said he was unable to return the money because they do not have a record of me calling to cancel the Kwik Pay feature. I’m like WTF!!
I called my bank and asked for an unauthorized withdraw on my account to get that payment back since they will not credit that for the next payment (that’s right, next month I’ll have to pay again).
These guys are the modern loan sharks!!
debra
suck suck suck
Jax
Has anyone found out where to send loan forgiveness paperwork?
Jax
I am applying for loan forgiveness too. Don’t know where to send it, and can’t reach anyone by phone. Does anyone know here to send it. I’m afraid they’ll loose it, or mishandle it too.
Anna Urban
I never got through the phone just puts you on hold & after being on hold for 5 min. you’re asked to call back. I called monday at 12:30-1pm without luck. The big issue is: I pay my loans aggresively. they apply it all to interest not the principal!!! No wonder my loan amount is not going down…SCAMMERS!!! If anyone interested in filing a class action with similar complaint please contact me!!! (FB-/ Philadelphia area)
Dana
As as been said above, horrible service. If they ever do get back to you, their replies are idiotic and unhelpful.
Pam Irick
Thanks at Donna for telling me how to get my husband to a live person. Hate Nelnet, they totally suck.
Vandk
THE WEBSITE CONTAIN ALOT OF BUGS…BAD BUSINESS EVER !
VandK
STUPID WEBSITE, STUPID CUSTOMER SUPPORT
NEVER SEE A STUPID BUSINESS LIKE THIS !
stephen
total crap service. actually, service doesn’t exist so i can’t rate it properly. time to switch providers. don’t use this company until they actually get an intelligent customer service person
George I
Nelnet has the most horrifically retarded customer service, with laughably classic phone system nightmare that is specifically designed to never connect you to the real person (unlike companies that think, like Apple). It took Sherlock Holmes deciphering on like a 4th try to actually get to their rep. For the past week all I’m trying to do is get them to communicate like humans and confirm my loan payoff that’s been paid 2 days ago – trying with both email and phone, its like I’m dealing with bafoons not people. Just can’t wait till I have nothing to do with them any more.
Roslyn
These are the most bumbling idiots I have ever dealt with. It’s a frikin embarrassing disgrace that these people are handling loans and can barely articulate themselves on the phone. It is an absolute nightmare to work or get ahold of any customer service reps. I strongly recommend any person that can avoid working with this company to heed warning and steer clear the (CUSS) away from these yahoos.!
ashley
Upon my saying that this company had horrible customer service and that it was nearly impossible to reach a real person, my loan advisor told me that Verizon was harder to reach a real person….So instead of actually trying to solve the problem, he made excuses and said another company was worse….Customer service at this place= 0.00%
erin
has very bad service. trying to pay off my school loans and they basically won’t let me, no one is helpful at all that I have talked too. I’m on the phone with them every week. I can’t wait to get rid of this company so I don’t have to pay them anymore
Susan Charles
awful awful awful don’t use this company. nightmare from hell
Dave
They should make sure nobody ever knows where the call center is. These people are the most frustrating idiots I have ever dealt with.
Donna
I finally figured out to get a live person. After you have entered all your information (acct #, etc, ) it will take you to the main menu. Press 4 and then press 8 to speak to a representative. I’m on hold, but at least I got this far. wish me luck
Bryan
Bad service.
Tym
I think speaking to a representative at Nelnet is highly overrated. These guys are MORONS; particularly Adam (x809154), who claims to be the highest ranking manager in the operation. I doubt it.
I tried to change my auto-debit payment amount for December only, in order to free up some cash for Christmas. I canceled Kwik Pay and did a one-time payment of the lesser amount. On Dec 24, they took BOTH payments out of my account, leaving me with a trail of bounced checks from Christmas purchases. At least my Nelnet account says it isn’t due again until 2/24/11. You would think it would be simple enough to reverse the second payment they took out of my account…but NO!
Adam now says it will take 10-30 days to credit the money to my bank, because it was MY error, and that it would be faster to have my bank dispute the charge as unauthorized.
Idiots!
Krystle
is it even possible to talk to a human if you do not have an existing nelnet account number?! i have yet to figure out how ….. absurd.
Eden
Nelnet has finally changed their automated phone calls. It is not completely helpful but if at the main menu you click 4, it will send you straight to a real person. Of course, it takes a million years, but hopefully I will get someone. I am still on hold.
cece
It’s so true what a lot of people say. They are the top of the worse you can’t get through on the phone and speak to anyone and the system does not work. They want you to go online. But even their online system does not work. It does not update.
voytek
NELNET HAS THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER, THEY SIMPLY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS OR TO HELP THEM. I HAVE BEEN TRYING FOR SEVERAL WEEKS TO REACH SOMEBODY TO TELL MY MY ACCOUNT NUMBER OR RESET MY ONLINE ACESS SO I COULD PAY MY MONTLHY BILLS BUT THE ROBOT JUST SAYS -SORRY, GOODBYE…. AND DISCONECTS!!!!
I WISH WE COULD FILE A GROUP ACTION WITH FCC OR BBB. THIS IS VERY UNETHICAL BUSINESS CODUCT!!!!
BRETT
Have any of you applied for loan forgiveness? you can get it if you taught in a low income school for 5 years. I was just wondering where to send the paperwork because it says to send it to your loan holder (Nelnet)
theresa pawelko
need to make it easier to talk to a customer service representative is obvious with the complaints above.
Sherri C
I’m copying and pasting this again, because it really does work. I just got off the phone with the one person in that building obviously 🙂 It’s a long thing to sit through, but you get to speak to a person!
So, TO TALK TO A PERSON, to re-iterate:
From main menu, press option 4 then press option 1 to review all loans. (You may have to press option 1 again here) You have to listen through every loan group being read off by the computer voice. Then at end you get option to speak to human or go back to menu – press option 1!
Good luck!
Corey
I will repost Jay’s comment on how to speak to a person. When I finally got through to someone, he casually said “Yeah, they are working on that, it has been a main complaint these last few weeks.”
“This is how you do it. You have to press option 4 then press option 1 to review loans you have to listen through every loan group being read off by a slow robot I have 7 of them. Then at end you get option to speak to human or go back to menu. First time I got disconnected by nel net when I tried human I had to go through all this again but I got a human.”

I agree with everyone. It is impossible to talk to a live person. I have never been able to change anything that I wanted to on this loan. I work with college students and advise them not to get their loans involved with this company.
Brennen
Nelnet is RE-DIC-U-LOUS! But after an arduous and frustrating process, I found out how to get through to someone:
From main menu, press option 4 then press option 1 to review all loans. (You may have to press option 1 again here) You have to listen through every loan group being read off by the computer voice. Then at end you get option to speak to human or go back to menu – press option 1!
gena
how do i talk to someone at nelnet.
kim
I agree. The customer service sucks. and reading all of these comments, I can see that nothing is being done about this. I even try the email option to get my questions answered and I get responses that don’t even make sense. The first response I got, via email, was one where the person clearly did not even read my email. The second one said my question had been answered when a representative called me. He didn’t even know my question!!!
Dan
The Customer Service from Nelnet is ridiculous. I can’t believe I have to sit on the phone for 30 minutes just to get a hold of another human being. I will submit a complaint to them fully once I do get a hold one someone of their Service Rep.
Jaclyn
I am extremly frustrated with the lack of service and the actual inability to make payments on my account. There is no way to actually make a payment, or increase your payments, on your account if you are even remotely ahead on them. I have tried calling the only phone number I can find on the website and it is an automated black hole. I have tried every prompt and there is abolsutely NO way to get a hold of a person. When I try to do a check by phone it tells me there isn’t a payment due at this time and HANGS UP ON ME!!! I sent an email request 2 days ago stating EXACTLY what I wanted assistance with and recieved a cookie cutter response that “since there is no payment due at this time I can not make automated payments without an override” – which I’ve already figured out on my own. My request was for someone to contact me, since it is impossible for me to contact them, so that I can obtain this override and begin to make automated payments on my account. I can not believe how difficult they make it for customers to pay off their loans early. That should be illegal!!!
Hackett
TERRIBLE I CANNOT BELIVE I CAN”T GET ANYONE ON THE PHONE. WHAT ABSOLUTE CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
katherine
Like everyone else on here, I find the customer service abominable. Can’t get anyone on the phone, can’t reset my password, and can’t stand this company.
elana
You just have to not press anything… it will think that you are disabled…
crawr
Ha ha ha, and here I thought I was all alone. This is ridiculous….
Andrea
Just wanted to report that John’s method of getting through to a person does work. It is irritating to have to listen through all that account information, but it does get you through to a live person to talk to. She answered my question in about 3 minutes once I was able to talk to her, though she didn’t seem that surprised to hear that it took awhile to get to her. I suspect that being an employee there is a tough job.
So, TO TALK TO A PERSON, to re-iterate:

This company offers the worst customer service I have ever seen. Ever. To not have any real person to aid with customer questions is appalling.
Michaela Kiewra
I cannot believe the unprofessional and absolute ignorance of this company!!! Like so many others, I have called and called AND called, but to no avail. The numbers called ONLY provide you with an automated voice – absolutely no way to speak to a live person. This is unbelievable!!! How can so many people be angry with a company and a company not respond to individual’s needs and requests? They have no problem sending and resending notices requesting payment and hitting you with late fees, interests, etc., but they refuse to speak with individuals. I agree with others – I loathe this company, they are MORANS, and if they refuse to answer my letters or e-mails, or call me, to hell with them.
I am demanding that someone contact me at my number in an attempt to resolve my concerns. . . we’ll see.
Mike
How do you get a person? Cripes! I got locked out of the website and I there is no option on the phone to unlock the web and I can’t access their helpstaff.
Jaymarksu
The customer service sucks. It is really obvious how bad there communication with the customers are. It took me through so many options and numbers just to speak with a associate about my problem. This is the only issue i had so far. This is ridiculous.
anonymous
figured out how to get a real person every time. call the 888 number, select 1 for english, and when it asks for you to enter your acct #, just sit there. It will ask a couple more times and when you enter nothing it will transfer you. then you have to hit 1 to tell them you want an account rep. lame but at least its a work around.
cristal
NO CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!
Ferne
I don’t like Nelnet for a number of reasons. The first is the fact that you can never get ah hold of a human during office hours. Second, when you get help from them on an issue via email, you get a response from different people every time your correspond with them and they aren’t helpful at all. Third, they have bad timing when they send you letters about the direct debit, they ask for 10 business days in advance for payment changes to be made, yet you get the letter that is dated five days before the postmark and it arrives in your mailbox four days before the next payment is suppose to come out! They got paid twice one month because they didn’t cancel the direct debit payment in time because they didn’t give me enough time to respond to their deadline and I had already paid them two weeks prior! Horrible company to deal with. Here is a direct number to a call center in NE, 402-458-2370, hit 0 and ask for someone to speak to about what your issue is. They are nice and helpful when you get a hold of someone, but their automated system and the way they do business is frustrating!
Winch
Thanks to Jay, after 30 minutes of listening to a robot go through my 14 loans I got to talk to a real person. He was very friendly but could not give me an answer to my question. I asked that he put a note on my account in case I have to call back in the next few days to get my payment fixed.
steph
I followed Jays directions and got through to a person and they were very nice. But they need to have an option in the main menu. Seriously!
So thanks Jay!
Jay
The customer service sucks. It takes 20 minuts to get a human I figured out how after an hour. This is how you do it. You have to press option 4 then press option 1 to review loans you have to listen through every loan group being read off by a slow robot I have 7 of them. Then at end you get option to speak to human or go back to menu. First time I got disconnected by nel net when I tried human I had to go through all this again but I got a human. I told them how ridiculous this is they said nelnet has recently realized how there is no human option.
Something needs to be done about this. I have to sit through all these options for crap that has nothing to do with my question. I work my a** off so I can pay them back I don’t need a hour of my night taken so I can ask a simple question.
Hope this helps someone.
Chenoa Bottinelli
It is IMPOSSIBLE to speak to someone in regard to your account. I will NEVER reccommend this business to anyone. I have called all numbers and have YET to speak to someone. If anyone has a DIRECT line to a HUMAN, PLEASE let me know.
Jim
Agree with Mark, there are no humans here. I have listened to every option and pressed every button possible on the impossibly long phone bank. I just sent an email hoping for a reply. will keep you posted
Mark
There are no humans here. I have listened to every option and pressed every button possible on the impossibly long phone bank. I have written repeatedly to have someone contact me-to no avail. If your loan gets sold here, instantly try and get it moved.
Jon
Netlnet has been servicing my loans for over 10 years. During those 10 years they have always been helpful and when there was a problem, there has been someone else more knowledgeable to look into the details.
Today I tried to call and am absolutely surprised and now livid that there is no customer service representative available. To the 1st post-er from May 19th, 2009… THE COMPANY HAS CHANGED and is now operating as a rogue internet company akin to the irresponsible companies hiding from any customers they receive business from. BMG music comes to mind and they were forced by law to post a customer service phone number with real operators available. That this is the same tactic being tested by a student loan provider is Absolutely appalling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Something legally substantial does need to happen NOW!!!!
Gabriela FLores
I would rather speak to an operator on not a computer when it comes down to my repayment of my loan.

Please post your email on here if you would like to be part of a business complaint on behalf of holders of student loans with nelnet, with legal representation.
The practices they are employing are illegal; namely, preventing payments by being unavailable.

Same problems, my loan was sold, i don’t even owe them money yet. I have questions on my account and tried calling the system just routes you to the main menu, no customer service..E-mailed them and still can’t get a response.. This company sucks.. I bet they will call me if i miss a payment.

I have been paying Nelnet for YEARS ON TIME EVERY SINGLE MONTH!!! I haven’t received statements in MONTHS and they’re telling me I’m behind in payments! I cannot get one Live person on the phone and I’m furious! I have received NOTHING via email or anything????? What am I supposed to do?

I don’t think there is a REAL person at Nelnet. I have been unable to talk to a REAL person through the terrible automated phone line. I’ve read on other message boards that there may be a class-action lawsuit filed based on Nelnets’ mis-calculation of interest charges – no surprise there!

My loan got sold to Nelnet. I had a problem that I tried to get help with, and the phone number they provided never gave me an option to talk to an actual person. It’s all automated and no help whatsoever. Then when I finally resorted to e-mail, I was told they couldn’t help me. Then they told me to call that same stupid 800 number that I had tried in the first place, which got me nowhere.

I have never had any problems with Nelnet. They have always been very helpful and when my deferrments were going back into repayment status they would send me a letter to notify me of such.

This company is an absolute joke… They need to be reported to the Better Business Bureau. What can we do? I want to get out of my loan with them and have it serviced elsewhere! There customer service is the worst I have ever dealt with. 4 months ago they said they would do direct withdrawlal from me, then they just stopped said it was my fault and say I have to pay all kinds of ridiculous fees, etc. They are so bad I almost want to cry. Get a student loan shouldnt be this frustrating.

Their methods of communication are TERRIBLE. After Nelnet bought my loan from Great Lakes, they sent a letter (after 4 months of perfectly fine automatic withdrawals) stating that I had requested my automatic payments to be stopped (which I had NOT requested). Tried calling their customer “service” phone line – did not even get to speak to a live person to explain what was going on – when the robot voice on the other end said they were connecting me to an operator, they DISCONNECTED the call. RIDICULOUS company and i HATE dealing with them.

Nelnet is a horrible company that seems to be on a mission to screw over student borrowers. I dealt with them in 2001-2003. I only got statements saying I was passed due. The customer service rep had me make a large payments via phone so I didn’t default on the loan. For 3 months I made payments only to find out the loan had been sold internally so I was making payments to the wrong nelnet. Their customer service told me I had already defaulted on the loan. I ended up paying off the loan through the state of michigan collection agency.
When I went to grad school I made sure to avoid nelnet. However, the Dept of Ed recently sold my loan to nelnet. When I received notification (not a statement) I went online to discover I was already past due on my monthly payment.

They are terrible!!!!!! they sold half the company to someone else who are as ignorant as they are, What that means is that they have half our account and someone else has the other half????? we have to send a payment to both companies and still get calls even though they are not late…… They have been trying to fix this company wide problem for a very long time now much just cant seem to manage!!!!! I hate this company, they are a joke. I am thinking about just telling them to keep there loan and never pay them anouther dime. Im so pissed i would rather have bad credit a few years than deal with this $%$ anymore. They are Morons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nelnet has failed to send me any paper bills or statements after my asking on 3 separate occasions. I get nothing from them, I just get online every month and throw money at them. When i first got out of school and called nelnet to check into consolidation, they told me they had recently closed their consolidation department. I have several small loans with different rates. I would advise to find a better company.

Nelnet is a horrible company. All banks would do well to find another company to manage their student loan accounts. I am a co-signer and ultimately responsible for payments and I find that Nelnet agents are rude and authoritarian. Nelnet communicates very poorly with co-signers resulting in unnecessary payment problems. Nelnet communicates extremely well with the credit reporting agencies to ruin credit scores even when small balances are due. I believe that Nelnet chooses to create problems whenever possible because reasonable communication can prevent them

I’ve had a completely positive experience with Nelnet. After graduation they helped me consolidate what was a mess of student loans and establish a reasonable payment to one source.
