How to Create a Haunted House in Your Dorm

black and white image of old house with gnarled treeHosting the perfect haunted house in your dorm is all about creating that spooky ambiance. Think low-lighting, eerie music and gobs of fake blood.

Follow these tips to cram the perfect haunted house into your dorm.

The bedroom: Turn your sleeping area into a crime scene by lining the door with police tape. Purchase old bed sheets from Goodwill and smear them with fake blood. Strategically place the fake murder weapon in plain sight. To top it off, place a large sheet of black paper on the floor, and outline a “dead body” in chalk.

The living area: Play an old slasher movie on your TV. Dress up a family of skeletons and place them on the couch so it looks like they’re watching the movie.

The Best Costumes for Halloween 2011

Angelica Teach from Pirates of the Caribbean Halloween is quickly creeping up on us, and if you are like me, you want to have the best costume of all of your friends this year! Last year, I somewhat failed on this and ended up wearing a leather jacket and going as a “Biker Chick.” That was it. Pretty creative, huh?

Well, this year is going to be different! I’ve come up with a great list of costume ideas and inspirations that I would love to share with you so that you don’t have a similar experience to mine last year.

First off, we have costumes for the ladies:

  • Lady Gaga. This one leaves you plenty of room for creativity, so try to channel Gaga when you are coming up with your costume. You could copy one of her more memorable outfits (meat suit, anyone?) or come up with your own creative that Lady G would be proud of.
  • Snooki. This would make a great costume for anyone because you are sure to get a reaction from your friends, no matter whether they love or hate the show. Copy Snooki’s mile-high hair, revealing clothes, and bad-girl attitude to rock this costume idea.

Fun and Unique Activities for Halloween 2010

halloweenThere’s a chill in the air, there are way too many scary movies coming to theaters, and I am suddenly craving candy corn like there’s no tomorrow. You know what this must mean….Halloween is almost here!

What are you going to do this Halloween? You could get dressed up as your favorite pop culture icon and go to the coolest party on campus. Or this year, you could choose to do something a little more creative with your All Hallows Eve.

Go Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF. UNICEF is the United Nations Children’s Fund and works for children’s rights and the protection of children around the world. It really is a very noble charity and for years now, trick-or-treaters have collected donations instead of candy on Halloween to benefit this foundation. So, grab your BFF, get all dressed up, and go collect donations instead of candy this Halloween. In addition to helping others, you will help yourself avoid the freshmen 15, which can still plague you long after your freshman year, sadly enough. Read the rest of this entry »

Best Halloween Costumes for 2010

oil-spill-costumeThe key to a great Halloween costume is to come up with something creative and identifiable. You make a much bigger bang at campus Halloween parties if you plan ahead–don’t be the eighth girl in skanky black “cat” outfit with eyeliner whiskers or another guy going as “ghost” in a sheet.

Here are our top picks for timely and trendy 2010 costumes.

Oil Spill-Inspired

The costume supplier Fun World has already whipped up this BP oil rigger costume, but we bet you can come up with your own creative variations. Petroleum piranha? Oil Otter?

Wolfman

Horror movies are always a great place to turn for Halloween costume inspiration. Benicio Del Toro’s transformation into the legendary monster is a great example of what can be done with makeup.

The Best Part of Halloween: The Candy

halloween candyEduInReview has already posted our favorite Halloween costume ideas and party ideas. And while these are both essential to a fun Halloween experience, I just noticed we neglected one of the most important parts of Halloween: THE CANDY!

I remember when I was a kid, I would always take a king-size pillow case as my candy bag. I would not stop trick-or-treating until I had filled that bad-boy up with sugary goodness. I’ve been told I’m strange, but my favorite thing to get was those little bags of candy corn. Also, Almond Joys and M&Ms were always a plus. I remember one year I got three king-size candy bars (Butterfinger, Hershey’s, and Snickers) – I was a very happy kid that night. My parents were slightly less thrilled; something about a sugar-high and me not sleeping that night. I’m still not sure what they were talking about.

Best Halloween Costumes for 2009

It’s October! And you know what that means: Halloween!skeleton mask

Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. When I was a kid, it was all about the candy. Now that I’m in college, it’s about having a better costume than my friends. My first costume when I was a baby was a pea-pod. I remember being a butterfly for four years in a row when I was 6-10. I like to think that my costume ideas have improved since my childhood; however, last year’s attempts to turn a black cocktail dress into a “Desperate Housewife” didn’t really turn out too well.

This year, I plan on picking my costume from one of the following lists of the top costumes for 2009. Read the rest of this entry »
