For-Profit Colleges Sue Obama Administration, Again

A new set of rules designed to regulate for-profit colleges caused industry lobbyists to file a lawsuit against the Obama administration. According to the lobbyists, the rules are arbitrary and unconstitutional.

The rules released the last week of October are an amended version of the gainful employment regulations proposed by the Obama administration earlier this year.

Under the rules, for-profit colleges would not receive federal funding for career training programs if their graduates graduate with a lot of debt but find only low-paying jobs.

Government Sues for Student Loan Repayment

Rising college tuition costs force an abundance of students to rely on Federal student loans. When it comes to repaying those loans, American borrowers are defaulting at an increasing rate. The United States Department of Education is taking action to get their money by suing persons who owe large loan repayments to the government.

“Defaulting” on a loan occurs when a borrower fails to make payments as determined by the loan agreement. This is different from “deferring” a loan; an option used by many students to postpone the repaying of a loan. It is not uncommon for student loans to come with a deferment option for a certain period of time. When deferment time is up and the borrower does not pay, the loan becomes “delinquent”. After a period of delinquency, the loan goes into “default”. When a loan defaults the lender has legal power to obtain their money. In the case of federal student loans the lender is the United States Government.

School District Sued For Influencing Votes on High School Field Trip

VoteEverywhere you look today in America, there is pressure or encouragement to vote.

Facebook.com, the popular social networking page has an application on the homepage asking if users have voted today. Google.com has a map option to see where the nearest voting facility is. Twitter is trending #govote. MTV is still sponsoring their political involvement campaign ‘Vote or Die’.

It seems political activist groups and parents at a Cincinnati high school are not happy about the one place they feel students should not be discussing politics: their school.

West Michigan University Student Sued Over Facebook Fan Page

GavelOn Friday, April 30, 2010, Western Michigan University student, Justin Kurtz received court papers notifying him of a four-page lawsuit filed against him from T&J Towing for $750,000.

Kurtz created a Facebook fan page called “Kalamazoo Residents Against T&J Towing” about the Kalamazoo towing company. The towing company has received multiple complaints by the Better Business Bureau and Kurtz asked those who had filed compliants to share their thoughts and stories about the company.
